Dr. Gulla Surya Prakash – A Life of Healing and Humility*

Born into a humble family in Ravupalli village, Parvathipuram Manyam district of Andhra Pradesh, Dr. Surya Prakash rose to become one of India’s most respected interventional cardiologists. His journey from rural India to AIIMS New Delhi and NIMS Hyderabad shaped a mission: to serve the underprivileged with advanced cardiac care at their doorstep.

He completed:

    1. Rao Bahadur Dr. C. Rama Murthy Memorial Prize in Bacteriology for having secured the highest mark in the competitive examination in Microbiology during the year 1981-82.
    2. Dr. P. Kutumbaiah Prize in Clinical Medicine for having secured highest mark in the competitive examination in Medicine in 1983.
    3. The Kirlampudi Gold Medal in Clinical Surgery for having secured highest mark in the competitive examination in Clinical Surgery in 1983.

    7. Received ‘Vaidya Shiromani’, a prestigious Award from Mega City Navakala Vedika on the occasion of Doctor’s Day on 1st July 2006.
    8. Received Distinguished Service Award for the outstanding and dedicated community services and exceptional efforts to promote Human Values and Culture by Viswamanava Samaikyata Samsat, Viswamandiram, Guntur in the year 2008.
    9. Telugu Association of North America (TANA), Texas, USA felicitated and also given ‘Vaidya Ratna’ Award for his dedicated healthcare services to poor people in the year 2010.
    10. Received “Vaidya Ratna Award” from Akkineni Foundation of America during 2nd Annual Award Gala of Akkineni International on 20th December 2015 for his exceptional services to the society.
    11. Received UGADI PURASKAR Award from Vamsi International Cultural Seva Sangam in the year 2016 for his meritorious services in the field of health care.
    12. Hon’ble Union Minister for Civil Aviation Shri Pusapati Ashok Gajapati Raju and Vizianagaram government authorities felicitated Dr. Prakash on the eve of Vizianagara Utsav 2016 celebrations for his highest accomplishments in the field of Medical Sciences from the District.
    13. Kinnera Arts Theatre – Kinnera Cultural Educational Trust felicitated him with UGADI PURASKAR Award given by Sri Kunijeti Rosaiah, Former Governor of Tamil Nadu in the year 2019 in recognition to his services to the society.

    17. ODYSSEY Outcomes STUDY: A Randomized, double blind, Placebo Controlled, parallel group study to evaluate the Effect of SAR236553/ REGN727 (Alirocumab) on the Occurrence of Cardiovascular Events in Patients Who Have recently experienced an Acute Coronary Syndrome, 2014-2015.
    18. HEART FAILURE REGISTRY: A Heart failure registry was started under "Smiling Hearts" Collaboration with Medtronic company at Care Hospitals, Musheerabad in September 2015 and around 1600 patients were enrolled and under meticulous follow-up till to date (monitoring telephonically and during outpatient visits by dedicated Heart failure team).

    ATEACHING & TRAINING EXPERIENCE

    Overall, about 35 years teaching experience at UG, PG and super specialty levels include DM, DNB Cardiology Fellows.
    1. Taught to the Undergraduate Students as part of Postgraduate Residency Scheme at AIIMS, New Delhi during 1986-88.
    2. Taught to both Undergraduates and Postgraduates during Senior Residency period at AIIMS, New Delhi, during 1989-90.
    3. As in-charge of Causality Services at AIIMS, New Delhi trained Post-MD, MS Registrars and Postgraduate students in Medicine and Surgery during 1989-90.
    4. Conducted teaching to PG Medicine students during Senior Residency (Cardiology) period at NIMS, Hyderabad, A.P. during 1991-95.
    5. As Assistant Professor of Cardiology, taught to both postgraduates in Medicine & Cardiology. He was also responsible for guiding postgraduates in their research projects and thesis work at NIMS, Hyderabad during 1995-97.
    6. As a Senior Consultant Cardiologist involved in teaching DNB Cardiology Fellows and also training them in Non-Invasive and Invasive Cardiology from 1997 to till date.
    7. As a Senior Consultant and Faculty member, taught about 70 students of Postgraduate Diploma in Community Cardiology (PGDCC) both in clinical and practical aspects during 2006-2012.

    ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES PERFOMED

    Over 20 years of administrative experience in hospitals of various levels including planning of new hospitals and reconstruction of old and sick hospitals.
    1. Medical Superintendent of Care Hospitals, Secunderabad Unit from 1998-2002.
    2. Medical Director of Care Hospitals, Secunderabad Unit from 2002 to 2019.
    3. Medical Director of Care Hospitals, Musheerabad Unit from 2013 to 2019. .

    SETTING UP OF VARIOUS TYPES OF HOSPITALS, FACILITIES & MEDICAL CENTRES

    1. Setting-up and Heading of Non-invasive Cardiology Services with Critical Care support at Secunderabad Branch in 1998 and maintaining it till date.
    2. Setting-up and Heading of Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre at Nampally Care Unit during 2007 to 2019.
    3. Established Renal Transplantation Unit at Care Hospital, Musheerabad in 2013 with all legal ethical permissions from Transplant Authority of India.
    4. Established Cardiac Cath Lab facility (GE INNOVA 2100 OPTIMA Edition) with advanced functions at Care Hospitals, Musheerabad in 2014.
    5. Setting-up and Heading of Day care dialysis units (3 numbers) with cost-effective services at Secunderabad Unit in 2015 and maintaining them till date.
    6. As Medical Director he has taken over Musheerabad Care Hospital, a sick Unit in 2013 and revived that unit completely, for which the Care Hospitals Management later selected as the Best Performing Unit in 2015.
    7. A 6 bedded step down intensive care unit for providing intermediate care facility was established at Care Hospitals, Musheerabad in 2015.
    8. Chaitanya Medical Centre(Diagnostic & Outpatient services) was established at Bobbili, Vizianagarm DT, A.P. in 2017 with all facilities including CT Scan/non-invasive cardiac diagnostic facilities.
    9. New CT Scan facility was established in Radiology Department at Care Hospitals, Musheerabad in 2017.
    10. A 12 bedded MICU (Medical Intensive Care Unit) with all latest facilities were established to serve critically ill patients of all divisions at Care Hospitals, Musheerabad in 2017.
    11. A 11 bedded Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU) with all monitoring facilities was established at Care Hospitals, Secunderabad in 2017. .
